Story behind our custom Sakura silk fabric print goes back to my childhood.
My beloved father was working in Japan as a research scientist in nuclear physics the year I was born. When he came back to meet me for the first time (I was 3 months old), he brought back with him the most exquisite gifts, including beautiful silk handkerchiefs with cherry blossom / sakura designs.
Growing up, I often pulled out the little gifts my father brought back, and was so in awe with their delicate beauty. My lifelong love for silk, cherry blossom, Japanese tea ceremony and beauty rituals began.
Along with the precious souvenirs my father brought with him, I also looked to Damian Hirst Cherry blossoms paintings and his technique for inspiration when designing the fabric print.
The reason I chose to use Sakura as the main silk fabric print for our collection is not only the beauty of the flower but also its symbolism.
Sakura - the national flower of Japan, represents a time of renewal and optimism. The pops of colour mark the ending of winter and signify the beginning of spring.
Sakura's magnificent but brief lifespan, falling a few weeks after full bloom, reminds people that similar to the delicate white-pink flowers a human’s life is also short and beautiful. Symbolic of the transience of life, a major theme in Buddhism.
We have used the Sakura print on three of our styles: Georgia Silk Georgette Blouse, Lola Silk Halter Top and Anahita Silk Kaftan Dress.
